Shakespeare Canada Summer Series
While Shakespeare Canada is primarily a touring company bringing lively Shakespeare adaptations to schools, in the summer they go all out and perform full-scale Shakespeare productions for the public.
The first of these Summer Series shows was 2011's Titus Andronicus at the Monument National in Montreal. Featuring a cast of over 30 actors, the 8 show run received rave reviews and sold-out many of the shows. It featured a live original percussion score performed by Shakespeare Canada's Executive Producer Ace Lopes. Artistic Director Aaron George was once again at the helm of the show, directing what was to be a visually vibrant, moving, sometimes shocking show. Titus Andronicus had never been performed in English in Montreal due to its strong content and graphic nature...a challenge that Shakespeare Canada. was up for according to all accounts...it did not disappoint! |
The next show in the Summer Series was 2012's Macbeth. The cast once again featured well over 30 actors. Some seasoned and some fresh out of theatre school...all ready to take on the juggernaut that is one of Shakespeare's most popular and beloved shows.
The show was once again be directed by Aaron George and also featured a new original live score by Ace Lopes. The shows took place at the Monument National from August 9 - 25 2012. 9 shows in all. This was also the first time Shakespeare Canada staged a show in-the-round! This was a very unique way to see Macbeth and brought the audience up-close and face-to-face with the Weird Sisters...all 12 of them!! Every show was completely sold-out with extra chairs being added to each performance. The reviews were unanimously positive. |
In 2013 Shakespeare Canada chose to tackle a comedy instead of going the usual route of a dramatic piece for their Summer Series. And what better comedy to set in the 80's than "A Comedy of Errors"?! The show featured a full live rock band led by Shakespeare Canada's Musical Director Ace Lopes and was once again directed by Aaron George and choreographed by Heather Huff.
Flashy costumes, 80's rock songs, big hair...you'd think you were back in the greatest era ever...the 80's!!!!

And in 2014 the stage was set for the return of the dramatic play! Set in traditional ancient Rome; Julius Caesar was brought to life by an incredible cast of over 20 actors and 3 directors! The directing triumvirate echoed the original triumvirate of Caesar's time.
Incredible staging, set design, costumes and a committed cast brought Shakespeare's timeless tragedy to life and once again solidified Shakespeare Canada's place as the #1 touring Shakespeare theatre company in Canada!
